How the World Made the West | Josephine Quinn in conversation with William Dalrymple
Historian and archaeologist Josephine Quinn's recent work, How the World Made the West, is an expansive history of the origins of the West spanning 4000 years. Questioning the idea of ‘civilisations’ within history, Quinn presents an intriguing idea of how it was contact and connections, rather than distinct and isolated civilisations, that drove historical change. In conversation with historian and Festival Co-Director William Dalrymple, Quinn calls for a reassessment of the idea of the ‘West’ and takes a deep dive into a shared history lost in time.
Josephine Quinn is Professor of Ancient History at Oxford University. She has held fellowships at the Getty Villa and the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. She published In Search of the Phoenicians in 2018; How the World Made the West appeared in 2024.
William Dalrymple is the author of the Wolfson Prize-winning White Mughals, Duff Cooper Prize-winning The Last Mughal, and the Hemingway and Kapuscinski Prize-winning Return of a King. His book, The Anarchy, was shortlisted for the Duke of Wellington medal, the Tata Book of the Year, and the Historical Writers Association Award, and won the 2020 Arthur Ross Medal from the US Council on Foreign Relations. Dalrymple has held visiting lectureships at Princeton, Brown, and Oxford, where he is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls. He was presented with the President’s Medal by the British Academy and was named one of the world’s top 50 thinkers for 2020 by Prospect Magazine. He is a founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival.

    Mr Tripathi is extremely creative but information wise no match for Dr Tharoor. His Iimitations are exacerbated by the lame moments of his surprise that the audience has read other versions of the epic. Maybe he is accustomed to a different or younger type of audience only.

    You noted that the Bible states, do not eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge. Obviously that is a metaphor. I see it as a warning against using science as a cornerstone for life.

    • @MrJeffreyromain

      Perfect example of taking something (sacred scripture in this case) out of context and twisting it to fit one’s worldview. It certainly is not metaphorical.

      @@Glen-uy4jt Thanks for your reply. God put it in the Garden of Eden-it was a literal tree. Perhaps making it metaphorical will justify certain spiritual or philosophical worldviews for some, but in the Bible it is a literal tree. (Speaking as a former mystic, myself.) Sure, there are numerous allegories and metaphors in the Bible, but to Christians this surely is not one. Shalom.

    • @Glen-uy4jt
      @Glen-uy4jt День тому

      @@MrJeffreyromain therefore this tree does not exist any more? Maybe it went extinct because of knowledge, or because we relied on science to give us our daily bread. Personally I think the story presented in the Bible pushes the limits of reality to the most extreme. Every culture has a creation story, why would only one be correct? Maybe superstition plays a part or maybe it is just plain old perception without knowledge being applied. Therefore we may have eaten the fruit but we missed the bus.

    I hypothesize that our issues are caused by the “ state of the mind “ which then manifests as the “ state of affairs “. Even thought the mind has massive potential, the majority are limited by perception and personal priorities. They seem especially focused on satisfying desires and filling their lives with comfort. People are disgusted by the “Hive “ mentality but it shows a focus on promoting the survival of the society, not just one family doing extremely well.

    It is peculiar that Mrs Armitstead has just published interview with Agnieszka Holland regarding her last piece Green Border, a naive, defamatory leftist depiction of what is an organised hybrid Russian attack on Polish border, with very well documented visa channels for trouble makers, islamic fundamentalists, sabotage agents. They devastated border infrastructure and killed border solder with spear. I said I find it peculiar, that she, without any afterthought or any reflection depicted the movie and it's creator as fighters for human rights and dignity, when in fact, those people cooperating with Russian agencies are thughs, the more she has gay son, who described himself as polymorphous, and these fundamentalists Agnieszka Holland glorify as the poor victims of right wing polish government, would stone her son or chopped him up as deviant. It seems leftist conditioning is stronger then common sense, and someone is burned by the sun here.

    I love the podcast and both Anita and William have a fantastic intellectual witty chemistry. I don’t find the podcast at all biased or rewriting history in an anti British agenda. I think it’s honest and raw and shares the other side of history. Often, history is rewritten by the victors, who for centuries have been white European men. As most of us are aware, there are many silent or forgotten voices that were never recorded or remembered. I think this podcast is a beautiful link between the history we think we know and the history we should know. I’m a white British guy and I have no problem in hearing about the British colonies and their dark history if it’s balanced and in context with the rest of the world at that time. What I don’t like is people being particularly biased towards the British Empire and forgetting about every other empire dealing with such horrors as slavery and colonisation.
